Rattan and Teaks guide to “A-grade ” Teak Furniture Care

Teak outdoor furniture is beautiful, durable and practical and is always the first choice for wooden outdoor furniture. It is a very stable timber, which has a high oil and rubber content creating a built-in water repellent which means it can be left out in the weather without becoming twisted, warped or rotting. It also contains an oil that is resistant to insects!

Teak is often misunderstood as being a “high maintenance” material when, in fact, it requires virtually no maintenance whatsoever and will last for generations to come, making it an ideal material for outdoor patio furniture.

New pieces of teak wood furniture will be in a honey/brown color, teak’s natural state. They can often appear to be polished. The polished appearance comes from oil occurring naturally in the wood. The oil on the surface will evaporate after a few days outdoors. It is the oil below the surface that gives the wood its durability.

Due to Teak wood’s high oil content and density, the grain will not “open” or split, which means the smooth, buttery texture of our Teak wood furniture will remain even after years of continued exposure to the elements.

Rattan and Teak recommends DO NOTHING, and allow your teak furniture to weather naturally. In less than a year of exposure to the elements Teak will naturally “weather” to a beautiful silvery grey patina which is preferred by many people. This greying process in no way affects the integrity of the teak.  The speed will depend on the amount of ultraviolet light and the rain the teak is exposed to.

Cleaning Your Teak Furniture

The only maintenance recommended by Rattan and Teak is an occasional cleansing with a soft bristle brush, and the Golden Care Teak Cleaner that we sell. We recommend doing this on a warm and dry day so that you are comfortable and the Teak has time to dry.

Treating Your Teak Furniture

If you really prefer the warm, rich, wood tones of natural teak, or would like to ” revive” already weathered teak to “like new” condition, then we suggest using the Golden Care teak maintenance products which we sell.

Golden Care has a full range of products to help you care for your teak outdoor furniture. No matter what colour you would like your teak furniture to be, there is a Golden Care teak product to meet your needs.

But why not use Teak Oil?

Many people make the mistake of applying teak oil to their outdoor teak furniture without knowing any better. They just assume it’s the thing to do. In reality, applying teak oil is a very short term solution to the natural colour fade process occurring in teak wood.

Far from protecting the wood or replenishing its oils, teak oil can actually do more harm than good. So called “teak oil” (which is actually made from linseed oil) contains solvents that will deplete the natural oil that was in your teak wood to begin with. The effect on the colour of the wood will be short-lived.

After several weeks it will begin to fade, and so you’ll have to constantly reapply oil. Moreover, if you’re not very careful with the application, excess oil on the surface of the wood provides food for the growth of various types of fungus. You would be much better off using one of Golden Care’s teak protecting products instead of an oil.

Golden Care developed their products with a variety of customers in mind. So the first decision you need to make is what colour you want your teak to be. Your primary choice is between maintaining the golden-brown colour of new teak or the attractive silver-grey colour of finely aged teak.

Golden Care Teak Cleaner

Golden Care Teak Cleaner is a superb cleaning and brightening product that should be used annually for untreated teak furniture. It is also recommended to use teak cleaner every 2 or 3 years on furniture that has been treated regularly with one of Golden Care’s  protectors before applying the protector again. If you have old, weathered teak that you’ve neglected, Teak Cleaner will restore it to a beauty.

Golden Care Teak Cleaner is a 2 in 1 solution that combines a cleaner with a brightener. With other company’s products you’d have to do this in two separate steps. With the furniture placed above a sheet of plastic to protect the ground, you should first thoroughly wet the furniture using a garden hose.

After shaking the bottle, you can use a sponge or a cloth to apply the cleaner to the surface of the wood. Then allow it to sit for 3 minutes. The next step is to scrub the furniture with a scouring pad in the direction of the wood grain. After cleaning the teak furniture thoroughly, rinse with water using a garden hose, but be sure not to use a high-pressure hose as this could damage your furniture. Then allow the furniture to dry.

After cleaning, you can use one of Golden Care’s other products depending on the finial colour you wish to achieve:

  • Teak Protector for a golden brown
  • Teak Shield to protect the furniture an almost invisible coating that makes it difficult for wine, olive oil or butter, coffee, ketchup etc from penetrating into your teak furniture.

Golden Care Teak Protector

In order to preserve the golden colour of new teak, you should use Golden Care Teak Protector. Before using their teak protector for the first time with new furniture, you should allow the furniture to sit out in the air for a week or two until the surface doesn’t feel oily to the touch.

Make sure to use a sheet of plastic or something similar placed underneath the furniture to protect the grass or pavement from possible discoloration from the teak protector. You can use a very fine-grained sandpaper to smooth over any rough areas on your furniture. Be certain there is no dust on your furniture before you start. This can be done using a damp cloth to wipe the surface.

Then make sure you give the furniture time to completely dry.

You need to shake the bottle of Golden Care Teak Protector thoroughly for a minute before using it to make sure you’ll get an even colour. Using a lint-free cloth you should apply the teak protector with the thinnest layer of coating possible. This is a case where less equals more. As you apply, you should rub the cloth in the direction of the wood grain.

After you’ve coated the entire piece of furniture, wait 30 minutes for it to dry and then begin applying a second coat. You can use your furniture after waiting one day for the protector to dry fully.

Golden Care recommends using their Teak Cleaner every 2 or 3 years on furniture that has been treated regularly with their Teak Protector. Also, if your teak furniture has already faded to a grey colour you will need to use a teak cleaner before applying the protector.

This easy to apply protector maintains the golden-brown colour of teak for a long time, in fact up to 4 times longer than teak-oil and up to 2 times longer than teak sealers.  We recommend using the Golden Teak Protector after cleaning your teak furniture with Golden Teak Cleaner.

Storing Your Teak Furniture For Winter

Teak furniture can be left outdoors uncovered all 12 months of the year, no matter where you live. If you choose to cover your teak furniture during winter, use a material that allows the wood to breathe. If you put your furniture away for the winter, do not store it in a heated room. The heat can dry out the wood and cause cracks. It is normal for teak wood to expand and contract with time and changes in weather.

As the wood ages, small checks or cracks may appear on the surface. This is normal and doesn’t affect the durability of the furniture.

Teak ages gracefully. Any resulting imperfections give it the natural and durable quality you will love.
